Why I built it

Every strategy I have written about on this blog started the same way: an idea, a spreadsheet, and many evenings of copying results and odds by hand. Over 2.5 goals, Home Favourite, FHG, HT LTD, GoalWatch. Each time I wanted to know one thing before risking real money: would this have worked, season after season, at the prices I could actually get?

The spreadsheets answered that slowly and badly. A total profit figure hides a lot. A strategy can show a nice number over ten years and still lose three of them in a row, and those are the seasons that make people quit. I wanted to see the losing years before placing a live stake, not after.

So I traded much less for a while and built the tool I had been missing.

What it does

  • Data: results and Pinnacle and bet365 closing odds for the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and Primeira Liga, every season since 2012/13. More than 27,000 matches.
  • Backtest: turn an idea into rules and replay it on that history. Results are split by season, league and month, with losing runs and drawdown shown next to the profit.
  • Strategies: save your rules and the app lists today’s matches that fit them.
  • Trackers: record the bets you place, with your own staking plan, and see how they settle against the closing price.

It is not a tipster service. It does not tell you what to bet. It shows you how your own idea would have done, and the answer is often “not as well as you hoped”. That is the most useful answer you can get before you put money on it.

Free, really

Everything in the app will be free with an account. No paid plans, no card, no limits on saved strategies or trackers. I built it for my own trading first, and I would rather have people using it than pay for it.
